Medical Boards

Under General Order 2.8.1,  2.8.2 and 5.21, Public Officers may be required to attend a Medical Board convened by the Chief Medical Officer to determine his/her fitness for further employment in the Public Service.

2.8.1. An officer or employee, whether or not he is on leave of absence at the time, may be required to present himself for examination to an approved medical practitioner or medical board with a view to it being ascertained whether he is physically and mentally fit to perform the duties of his office in the Public Service of Barbados. The cost, if any, of such examination will be paid from Barbados Government funds.

2.8. In cases of examination under Order 2.8.1 the following apply:-

(a) The Director General (Human Resources) should request the Chief Medical officer to appoint a Medical Board to examine the officer;

(b) Every medical practitioner in the Government service must serve on a Medical Board when appointed by the Chief Medical Officer and shall be entitled to such fee as the Minister responsible for establishments may determine;

(c) A Medical Board shall consist of two or three registered medical practitioners, the number to be at the discretion of the Chief Medical Officer;

(d) The report of the Board should be submitted to the Chief Medical Officer who will pass it, with comments if necessary, to the Director General (Human Resources);

(e) If the officer is absent from the country, the agency representing the country will arrange for a Medical Board.

5.21 An officer or employee on sick leave may at any time be required by the Director General (Human Resources) to be examined by a Government Medical Officer or a Medical Board and such officer shall submit to be so examined at such time and place as the Government Medical Officer or the Medical Board shall appoint.  The Board shall submit its report in the prescribed form set out in the Fourth Schedule to this Chapter.


Requests for medical boarding of officers may be initiated in various ways including:-

1. At the request of the Head of Department if this is justified;

2. After three (3) months continuous extensions of sick leave;

3. After an excessive number of short periods of extensions of sick leave;

4. After more than three (3) months accumulated extensions of sick leave for periods with breaks of six (6) months or less between intervals;

5. Terminal or apparent permanent illness or incapacity;

6. Irrational behavior.
